From the 14th to 16th centuries the parish church of Willesden, St Mary's, became a place of pilgrimage due to the presence of two statues and a well - all, apparently, with miraculous powers. The old parish church of St. Mary's had long ceased to be the focus of the area and no civic centre grew up to take its place. The population was unstable: people moved into Willesden from areas like Paddington and Marylebone and having achieved a .
